Dog World Review

Fanciers of the Bulldog will be delighted to see that there is yet another excellent breed book available.

Bulldogs - An Owners Companion by Christian Bruton is published by The Crowood Press liberally illustrated throughout and printed in a clear typeface on good quality paper. It runs to 223 pages. Christian has had plenty of experience in the breed, owning the famous Ch. Tyegarth Jacob of Kelloe with his partner David McHale among other champions they bred including the breed record holder Ch. Kelloe White Glove.

The book covers nearly everything the average bulldogger would want in one book. I particularly found the history chapter fascinating and would have loved to have met the likes of Jacob Lampier and Jimmy Knode.

Jimmy was bookmaker who owned a champion bitch called Bosworth Queen. Jimmy decked her in a real diamond collar and would hire a prop plane and fly over the championship shows trailing banners saying `Queenie is here¨!

But to find out more about Jimmy and Queenie you must read the book. I promise you that you will not be able to put it down.

The standard is comprehensively covered and the 1875 Standard and the American one are included too. Bulldogs worldwide are dealt with and there are lots of pictures that I haven't seen before.

I particularly liked the section towards the end of the book where a list and photos of every Bulldog of the Year winner since 1977 is featured.

In all, it is well worth its cover price of 16.99 pounds.
