WINDSOR CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW 2010
BULLDOGS – JUDGE : DAVID MCHALE (SPAIN)

May I thank the Windsor Dog Show Soc. for inviting me to judge their 60th anniversary show. I awarded my first set of CC´s here 25 years ago and have won BIS here with Jacob and RBIS on 2 occasions with Lucifer and White Glove which just happens to make this my favourite show!
Three years ago I received the largest entry in the Utility Group at Crufts and today I had the same again with 140 entries. I am fully aware of the perils of crossing the M25 on a busy Friday so a big thank you to  all exhibitors as this made my 4000 kilometre round  trip all the more worthwhile.
My overall concerns with the breed were the disappearance of wide underjaws, many had no width between the canines. Generally, although I was pleased with both my final line ups – bitches were stronger than the males.
I was also a little concerned with tails especially in dogs. Many had fairly large screw tails set on high like a bun round. Viewed from the side this spoilt the overall out line of many dogs.  We are supposed to be breeding away from this and heading for  free, fairly short but down facing small straight tails. Whilst I appreciate that nothing can be changed overnight – it’s a problem that needs to be addressed.
All my exhibits moved freely and soundly, but many, especially in males, were pinning rather badly.

Class 877 MPD  (11 entries) Abs: 6
1st. 3920 Pearce Mr PD Sodburybull Coldplay
W. just over 6 months with sour expression. Nice straight bone, good reach of neck and a good straight free tail. Good pigmentation and shown in top condition
2nd. 3921 Pearce Mr P D Sodburybull Bullimore
 W. Litter brother to first. Good dark eyes, compact and a shade better hind angulation than 1st. Nice and cobby but a slightly tighter tail than his brother. Two super puppies that will no doubt change places as they develop.

Class 878 PD  (7 entries) Abs. 2
1st: 3843 Bishoprick, Mr J & Mrs D & David Mr K OcoboBig Yin Pheorm
Very much my type of bulldog. W/R Good turn of underjaw and lovely dark eyes.  Good well boned  front with tight feet. Correct size for his age – went round the ring with  style. Another 6 months and he will worry the best.
2nd: 3882 Goodwins Mrs M Britishpride Aramist
Flashy R/W  with good bone, compact and well off for brisket and rib. Would prefer a little more reach of neck. Presented in good condition.
3rd: 3923 Perkins Mr & Mrs J Quintic Follow Me
Class 879 JD (11 entries) 1 Abs.
1st: Davison Mr T & Mrs A Brampton Mr Black Hope

2nd: 3905 Lobry Sautier, Mr A & Garside Mrs S E Edition of Luxe Kepi Blanc
Saw this dog on several occasions in Spain and he has now matured onto another level. R&W  with lovely head and expression. Nice well boned front and a good barrel of rib. Presented today in super condition but lost out to first on his movement.
3rd: 3892 Harris Mr R Nobozz Riddick
Class 880 ND (3 entries) Abs: 2
1st: 3846 Bragger, Mr S P & Hill Mrs M L Prideofbully Sir Charles
Although he stood alone in this class it would have taken a good dog to beat him. Quality standard sized well proportioned dog of richest mahogany  B/W colour.
Class 881 PGD (12 entries) Abs: 2
1st: 3847 Bragger, Mr S P & Hill Mrs M L Prideofbully Sir George
Stood out in this large class. Standard size, compact with good spring of rib, nice well boned front – he moved freely round the ring. Another 6 months will see him worry the best and considered him for the RCC. On looking at the catalogue I notice that the winner of the previous class and this boy are litter brothers. So refreshing to see such clearly defined rich mahogany brindles once again in the breed.
2nd: 3927 Saunders, Mr & Mrs S A Gee Jaminic Justification At Standproud JW
Flashy R/W standard size male. Short coupled, compact  strong headed dog. Both first and second in this class could change places another time and I think there is a good future for both of them.

Class 886 PB (11 entries) Abs: 2
1st: 3842 Bennet Mrs R Rhobull S Lillie
She reminded me of many of my past champion bitches and I fell for her the minute she entered the ring. Masses of bone and substance – she excels in dark pigmented eyes, strong stand off expression and she was adorable. When it came to the CC and later BOB she just had to have it! Both her and her novice handler went around the Group ring as if they owned it and to loud applause and I was delighted to see her – a puppy amongst established top flight champions pulled out to the final eight! B.CC. BOB & BPIB.

Class 890 LB (12 entries)  Abs: 4
1st:  3853 Cole MissV A Whitecole Elegant Miss  JW
Not one that initially stood out in this class but as you go over her you begin to appreciate her super quality. Feminine with lovely expresion .  Good turn and width of underjaw.  Neat hindquarters and a straight free tail. Would like to see her gain her title and I awarded her the RCC.
2nd: 3890 Harding Mr P, Mrs M & Masters PJ & PE Pringhams Éclair Glace
Another top draw bitch presented in immaculate  condition, spotlessly clean  and shown to her full potential but I preferred the head of first. Many exhibitors showing whites are not putting enough effort into their grooming and they should look and take a leaf out of this owner/breeders book.
3rd:  3953 Van Huyk-Verschure Mr & Mrs W I Gorgeous Pride Of The Woods.
Class 891 OB (11 entries) Abs: 2

Crufts 2007 - Judge David McHale - Critique - Dog World & Our Dogs

Firstly, can I thank all bulldoggers for the wonderful entry, the largest ever for our breed at Crufts, and for the first time - the biggest entry of dogs in the Utility Group. With such a mammoth entry I was pleasantly surprised at how very few absentees there were on the day. Out of my largest class of 30 - there was only one!
Finally, yes and everything they say is true! - there is nothing like judging your own breed at Crufts!

Limit Dog - 1. Norris´s Jumano Johnny Be Good. Mature R/W. This is first and foremost a head breed and this is the classic head! Perfect from every angle and excelling in the main things missing these days. A tremendous breadth and corresponding width and depth of foreface combined with a beautiful brick shaped skull. Lovely dark well fitting eyes, with no hoare showing when viewed front on - his mouth with perfect dentition, good width between the canines, and a straight set of incisors. An underjaw that started far back with super width, turn and fit. Strong boned front with neat tight feet.Well tacked on shoulders with nice turn of forearm. Good brisket and depth of chest, all that set him apart from the rest. Delighted to find that today´s CC gave him his well deserved title! CC & BOB.
